Kapama Karula Lodge lies nestled in a grove of indigenous trees on the banks of the perennial Klaserie River. It’s a luxury family-friendly safari destination in Kapama Private Game Reserve which spans some 13 000 hectares and falls within the Greater Kruger National Park. What makes Kapama Karula Lodge special is its stylish fusion of neutral colours and wood offset by contemporary décor and subtle lighting. The ensuite villas and luxury safari tents are furnished with luxurious fittings and fully-equipped for comfort and convenience, including a Nespresso coffee machine, iPod docking station and Wi-Fi connectivity.
The lodge sleeps a maximum of 20 guests in 10 chalets or rooms, most of which sporting a small veranda with camping chairs and with views of the river, while others have views of a small plains area with a watering hole. Accommodation is comfortable and suitable for those looking for a value for money option in the Sabi Sand. All rooms are en-suite and airconditioned. Some rooms are set up to allow families or small parties of three friends with separate but connected rooms. Umkumbe has three Standard and seven Superior rooms, with the latter larger with outdoor en-suite showers.
Each luxurious, freestanding and spacious suite offers seclusion and spectacular views of the Sand River while the main building houses a library containing rare African books and magnificent works of art, an elegant, African themed air-conditioned dining room, historic bar featuring photographs of the early days of the area, a large wooden safari deck where meals and teas are served and a traditional reed “boma” for evening meals around the fire. A large infinity pool also offers magnificent views across the river while guests also have a safari boutique with quality clothing, jewellery and artefacts and a small fitness facility with a steam room available.
Sabi Sabi Game Reserve forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park and is the choice of discerning guests from all over the world. The reserve is a wildlife oasis where game abounds, with the surrounding habitat home to the Big 5 – lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant – as well as cheetah, wild dog and some 200 other indigenous animal species. Selati Camp is furnished according to a railway theme due to a historic branch railway from the interior to Delagoa Bay in Mozambique, known as the Selati Line, crossed the Sabi Sand Reserve many years ago. The railway theme includes original steam engine name plates, signals and shunter’s lamps lighting the way to interesting memorabilia and collector’s pieces in each suite. Children are welcome to stay at Selati Camp when the lodge is booked on an exclusive-use basis.
Guests are collected from a designated address for the journey through the wide-open spaces of the Highveld, down the escarpment and through the scenic Lowveld to the Greater Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga.
